Description

This itinerary draws a loop starting and ending in San Martino di Castrozza. The hike is relatively easy, with no particular technical difficulties (except for its nearly 800 m of ascending elevation gain), and traverses the open high altitude terrain that stretches from Malga Pala to Malga Fosse di Sopra, separated by the ridge of Cròde Rosse, on which friendly Marmots can often be spotted.

Starting from the Colverde cable car parking lot, the route begins to climb up the Colverde ski slope along the Signpost No. 701 toward Rifugio Colverde / Rosetta to the first right-hand bend of the ski slope, where it continues on the path that climbs vertically into the woods below the cable car. The trail leads straight to the arrival of the cable car, at Rifugio Colverde (1,965 m asl), just before which you turn left, following the signs for Malga Pala.

Once at Malga Pala (1,897 m asl), the route climbs vertically to the N along the beautiful green meadows behind the hut, where during the summer season it is easy to encounter grazing horses and sheep. This passage is characterized both by a scenic ridge to the left overhanging Passo Rolle (NW direction) that skirts the pastures to the summit and by a beautiful sight of the main peaks of the summits of the Pala Group: Cimón della Pala, Cima Rosetta and Pala di San Martino.

Once at the highest point of the tour, at Cròde Rosse (about 2,160 m asl), the view opens up to the slope looking toward Passo Rolle, with Malga Fosse di Sopra in the foreground and the mountain range of Lagorai on the left, to the E. From the ridge of Cròde Rosse, the route takes the path of the Signpost No. 712 “Finanzieri”, which descends toward the hut of Malga Fosse di Sopra. After an initial fairly steep section on the grass, the trail proceeds through sparse forest until it reaches near the malga.

The way back from Malga Fosse di Sopra (1,936 m asl) follows the trail alongside the bed of the Cismón Torrent until the bridge named Ponte delle Fosse, where it meets the main SS50 road of Passo Rolle, which it follows for a short stretch and then continues to the right along the path (cycle path) that allows you to return to San Martino di Castrozza, avoiding the main road. At the second crossing of the path on the SS50 hairpin bend, the itinerary proceeds to the right, crossing the Cismón Torrent on the convenient gravel road that leads to the building of Villa Pisoni, on the orographic right of the watercourse. From Villa Pisoni, at last the route continues downhill through the pastures along the Signpost No. 14, which passes by the hut of Malga Fosse di Sotto (1,639 m asl) and arrives at the meadow of Prà delle Nasse, in the village of San Martino di Castrozza.
