Description

This beautiful winter hike takes place in a decidedly unpopular corner and is quite sunny in its highest part, amid unspoiled nature and amazing views seasoned with magnificent reflections caused by the light effects of the cold season. Due to the difference in exposure between the sections of the itinerary, it is recommended to bring gaiters, snowshoes and crampons since, during the winter, one could pass from places characterized by the presence of ice to others with abundant snow.

From the restaurant of Rifugio Fonteghi, the route starts out following the gravel road of the Signpost No. 727 towards Rifugio Boz. After passing through the location of Vaticano (1,130 m asl), the hike comes to the crossroads at Buse (1,157 m asl), where it continues, keeping to the left, yet following the signs heading to Rifugio Boz (Signpost No. 727). The road named “Strada Forestale Neva” continues uphill crossing the meadow of the location of El Belo, then enters the dense forest on the orographic right of the stream of Rio Nèva. The road climbs steadily without steep sections toward Nèva; after about half an hour you reach the fork on the edge of the pastures of the hut of Malga Nèva Prima. From the junction, the route continues to the right, still following the Signpost No. 727 toward Rifugio Bruno Boz.

If the hike proves too challenging, it is possible to cut the more technical part of this loop by continuing straight at the junction, arriving at the hut of Malga Nèva Seconda and reaching from there the summit of Colle San Pietro by climbing along the convenient mule track that connects the hut with the Nèva Aqueduct, thus merging back with the full loop.

A few dozen meters downhill and the trail of the Signpost No. 727 leads to the small wooden bridge that crosses the bed of Rio Nèva, then plunges back into the woods of the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, in the territory of the municipality of Cesiomaggiore (BL). A final uphill effort leads directly to Rifugio Bruno Boz, already visible shortly after crossing the bridge.

From the hut of Rifugio Bruno Boz (1,718 m asl), the itinerary continues uphill for a short distance following the main trail of “Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 2” (Signpost No. 801) towards Pass de Mura. Just above the Rifugio, on a wide grassy hollow, in the presence of snow you are likely to lose the trail which, by looking to the overpass in front of you, climbs the ridge to the left.

From the gentle saddle of Pass de Mura (1,887 m asl), located to the N of the grassy hill of Colsènt, the view sweeps over the Nèva pastures, the nearby Sass de Mura with its unmistakable “Birillo” and, in the distance, the view fades to the tooth shape of Mount Pizzocco to the E and the entire chain of Vette Feltrine to the SO. From here the hike continues cutting across the sunny slope on the path of the Signpost No. 748 heading NW, which soon leads to crossing a series of streams and reaching, after crossing the bottom of the valley (the most difficult passage of the trail if it is icy), the junction near the Nèva Aqueduct (1,825 m asl). At the fork, the route continues following the Signpost No. 748 toward Colle San Pietro / Col de San Piero, which, after a stretch on a wide track slightly uphill, leads near the top of the grassy summit.

From the top of Col de San Piero (1,954 m asl) – highest and most scenic point of the route -, which adds to the panorama seen from Pass de Mura the broad view of the Valley of Giasinozza and the mountain ranges of Pale Alte and Pale di San Martino to the N, the hike descends the ridge to the S bringing you back onto the main trail (Signpost No. 748), which continues towards Rifugio Fonteghi. A pleasant descent through sparse forest along the southern shoulder of the summit of Cima Spizòti leads to a clearing, where the trail becomes a gravel road; from here the route proceeds along the road (Strada Forestale Costabella) passing first at the hut of Casera Scaorìn (1,553 m asl), then at the Pranove junction (1. 335 m asl) and then to that of Costa Bella (1,250 m asl), before passing by the side of the meadows of the location of Luz and finally reaching the wide crossroads with the asphalt road at the hamlet of Agaón (1,127 m asl), located 200 m away on road (Signpost No. 726) from the hut of Rifugio Fonteghi.
