CAI-724 “Val di Roda”

Description

This itinerary, highly recommended during the winter season with snowshoes due to its beauty and ease of execution even in the presence of snow, leads from the amazing meadows of Prati Còl, located in the extreme southern corner of the town of San Martino, to the hut of Malga Civertaghe, shaping a loop crossing the valley called Val di Ròda twice.

It is possible to get to the starting point of the itinerary by starting directly on foot from the village of San Martino di Castrozza, or by leaving your car in the large parking lot of the chalet of Maso Còl.

The itinerary starts a few hundred meters north of Maso Còl, at the beginning of the path of the Signpost No. 23 / 724, which gently climbs along the edges of the wide meadow of Còl. After the first pleasant uphill stretch, you reach the wide and scenic basin of Prati Còl (1,510 m asl), where you can enjoy an impressive and magnificent view that sweeps from the peaks of Cimon de la Pala to that of Val di Ròda. The route continues along the contour, leaving the meadows of Prati Còl behind and entering the forest on the north-western side of the Val di Ròda, following a trail that leads directly to the hut of Rifugio Forestale (1,551 m asl). After a short ramp preceding to arrival by the hut, from Rifugio Forestale the route continues along the Signpost No. 724 towards Malga Civertaghe, perhaps in the wildest section of the itinerary,in the silent upper Val di Ròda, which features some impressive glimpses that open in the vegetation on the surrounding peaks. After passing the watercourse of Rio Val di Ròda, the path continues along the edges of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Natural Park towards the south, arriving in a few hundred meters at the crossroads with the gravel road called “Sora Rónz”, which you follow in a pleasant descent to arrive, after two wide hairpin bends, in the pastures of Malga Civertaghe, preceded by the artificial hydroelectric basin of Civertaghe.

From the hut of Malga Civertaghe (1,375 m asl), the return proceeds on a very first stretch along the flat gravel road that continues north towards Val di Ròda. About a hundred meters after leaving the meadows, a sign indicating San Martino di Castrozza / Còl shows the way to the path of the Signpost No. 23 which leads back to Prati Còl. The route continues uphill along the Signpost No. 23 which plunges into the forest climbing the south-eastern slopes of Val di Ròda, leading to the characteristic wooden bridge that allows you to cross the stream of Rio Val di Ròda before a last fairly steep ramp which allows you to get to Prati Còl.

Once at Prati Còl, it will be sufficient to follow the stretch of the Signpost 724 initially taken at the start of the itinerary towards Maso Còl. In the presence of snow, it will also be possible to shorten the route by cutting the slope of Prati Còl to reach the chalet of Maso Còl directly.
