Description
The proposed hike crosses the extreme southwestern part of the Dolomites of the Pala Group, developing around the ridge made by the summits of Oltro, Le Rocchette, Feltraio and Regade.
The route starts near Malga Canali (1,307 m asl). From the end of the asphalt road leading to the hut, follow the gravel road of the Signpost No. 707 towards Rifugio Treviso. After about a kilometer of easy walking on the road, take the wooden bridge on the right that crosses the Canali Torrent, where the path of tthe Signpost No. 718B “Trói dei Todéschi” begins; the path climbs, still in the shade of the forest, and leads up to the location named Campìgól dell’Óltro (1. 700 m asl), where it meets the trail of the Signpost No. 718 – part of the route of Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 2 (AV2) – climbing from Rifugio Treviso to Forcella dell’Óltro. The itinerary then continues following the Signpost No. 718 “Regade” towards Forcella dell’Óltro, on a sometimes slippery ascent that leads to the mountain gap.
At the crossroads at ~1,770 m asl, a few hundreds meters from Campìgól dell’Óltro, the itinerary turns right, leaving the Signpost No. 718 and continuing on a decidedly rougher track toward the fork of Passo Regàde. The ascent to the fork along the path “Sentiero Passo Regàde” is undoubtedly the most strenuous, fascinating and at the same time least known section of the itinerary. A rather unstable scree followed by an uncertain (very few markings) and at times exposed path, in which it is necessary to keep in mind the objective of skirting the base of the O slope of the ridge tops, goes up the coast towards the S in an environment little frequented by hikers but of rare beauty.
Once reached the narrow gap of Passo Regàde (2,200 m asl), it is possible to make a small detour of ~10’ by continuing on the exposed grassy ridge to the SO (unmarked trail) until getting by the visible iron cross placed on the top of the summit of Cima Regàde (2,245 m asl), surely one of the best sights over the Valley of Primiero.
From Passo Regáde the hike descends along clear tracks towards E until it crosses again the trail of the Signpost No. 718 “Regàde”, abandoned for the ascent in favor of the “Sentiero Passo Regàde”, which comes from Forcella dell’Óltro. On this side of the ridge the trail becomes definitely easier, also due to the better maintenance of the main route “Alta Via”; the landscape changes considerably and the ground becomes grassy and less unstable. A long downhill segment will be covered on meadows and sometimes under rocks with wide views, on which it is possible to admire from above Cereda Pass and the small villages of the Valley of Mis. Once the track gets by the crossroads located below Forcella dell’Oltro, the Signpost No. 718, which the itinerary continues to follow, turns left – uphill – toward the gap that allows you to return to the side of the ridge heading towards the Valley of Canali, in the only stretch of the itinerary that crosses the borders between the Regions of Trentino – Alto Adige / Südtirol and Veneto. In about twenty minutes the route arrives at the gap of Forcella dell’Oltro / Forcella d’Oltro (2,094 m asl), from where you proceed carefully on the steep descent into the gully that leads to Campìgól dell’Oltro, from which you continue, still along the Signpost No. 718, on a pleasant, undulating stretch in the woods that leads in about ten minutes to the hut of Rifugio Treviso – Canali (1,631 m asl).
From the Rifugio, in order to head back to Malga Canali, it is enough to follow the clear signs, with the many available variants, of the path of the Signpost No. 707 towards Malga Canali / Ritonda / Cant del Gal.
This itinerary’s length and climbing are not prohibitive, however given the unpopularity of the places touched while walking along the route and the presence of some exposed and unprotected sections on the path “Sentiero Passo Regàde”, where experience and “godfeeling” can make a difference, this route is not recommended for beginners.
