Tourism at Rifugio Treviso

The typical tourist access allowing to reach the hut of Rifugio Treviso – Canali from Val Canali is an easy walk on a wide gravel road that initially runs along the bed of the Canali stream and then faces, on the right, a last slightly more demanding stretch in the woods that leads the hut. The walk is suitable for all seasons, even at night, also considering the fact that Rifugio Canali is the lowest and most accessible hut of the whole Pala Group. Although the best-known tourist access includes a round trip along the gravel road of the Signpost No. 707, thanks to the wide network of trails present in the upper Val Canali, the route proposed here includes two variants, allowing you to cross the meadows of Prati Canali during the ascent and to initially stay higher in altitude by walking along the path called “Trói dei Todéschi” during the descent.

The route begins at the location of Sabbionade / Ritonda / Cant del Gal, at the end of the main road at the bottom of the Valley of Canali. From the starting point, at an altitude of 1,180 m asl, the itinerary follows the wide trail immersed in the woods that, starting N of the Cant del Gal restaurant, steeply climbs towards Malga Canali / Rifugio Treviso – Canali, heading E. The initial ramp is undoubtedly the most challenging part of this walk.

Once the initial stretch of just over a hundred meters is completed, the meadows of Prati Canali open up, which the route crosses uphill by following the trail until it reaches the next meadow named Pra Òstio, from which it proceeds E towards Malga Canali, in a short stretch where it is possible either to follow the old path (pre Vaia storm) or the parallel gravel road.

Once by the hut of Malga Canali (1,307 m asl) with its majestic panorama – Cima Feltraio, Cima d’Oltro, Sass d’Ortiga, Pala del Rifugio Canali, Coro, Alberghet, Pala dei Colombi -, the route proceeds along the gravel road of the Signpost No. 707, which rises gently on the orographic right of the Canali stream. After passing by the location of Pian de la Baracca (1,393 m asl), the path crosses the stony bed of the Canali stream, taking you to the orographic left of the watercourse, by the location of Pian dei Orti (1,393 m asl). The wide trail traveled up to here becomes a tinier path, which begins to climb the wooded slope downstream of Rifugio Canali. After the crossroads with the path of “Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 2” (AV2), a series of hairpin bends in the woods lead directly to Rifugio Treviso – Canali.

From Rifugio Canali (1,629 m asl) the route continues following the trail of AV2, taking – on the S side of the building – the Signpost No. 718 “Regàde” toward Forcella dell’Óltro / Passo Cereda. The path of the Signpost No. 718 traverses the gully called Valón delle Mughe and, undulating halfway up the hillside in a sparse forest, with a pleasant route that allows you to admire the beautiful view of the Pale di San Martino / Pala Group on the other side of the Valley of Canali, it reaches the location of Campìgol dell’Óltro (1,700 m asl), in just over a kilometer. From the small plateau, the itinerary descends to the valley floor by following the path of the Signpost No. 718B “Trói dei Todéschi” towards Pian de le Léde / Cant del Gal.

At the end of the downhill stretch, once you have reached the bed of the Canali stream, simply continue towards Cant del Gal, heading SW, along the Signpost No. 707. After a very last stretch on the paved road alongside the meadows of Prati Canali, the route returns to the starting point, at Sabbionade / Ritonda / Cant del Gal.

• From the location of Sabbionade / Ritonda / Cant del Gal (1,180 m asl), go up the trail that starts to the N of the Cant del Gal Restaurant towards Malga Canali / Rifugio Treviso – Canali [0h 30],
• From the hut of Malga Canali (1,307 m asl), proceed along the gravel road of the Signpost No. 707 towards Rifugio Treviso – Canali, passing by the location of Pian dei Orti (1,393 m asl) [1h 30],
• From the hut of Rifugio Treviso – Canali (1,629 m asl), continue along the AV2 path by following – S of the building – the Signpost No. 718 “Regàde” towards Forcella dell’Óltro / Passo Cereda, until you reach the location of Campìgol dell’Óltro [2h 15],
• From Campìgol dell’Óltro (1,700 m asl), descend to the valley along the path of the Signpost No. 718B “Trói dei Todéschi” towards Pian de le Léde / Cant del Gal [2h 40],
• Proceed downhill along the Signpost No. 707, heading back at the starting point [3h 00]. ✓
