- Located on the southern slope of the mountain range of Vette Feltrine, near the “Busa delle Vette” (large glacial formation), the Rifugio Giorgio Dal Piaz, at 1,993 m asl, is within the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park. The Rifugio is a gateway to the incredible, and relatively unknown, world of the Vette Feltrine.
- The idea of building a hut in the Dolomites mountains of Feltre came from Professor Giorgio Dal Piaz (1930s), a distinguished Italian geologist whose career was ruined by the hydrogeological studies on the feasibility of the Vajont dam for the company of SADE.
- In early 1962, the Board of Directors of the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) of Feltre decided to celebrate its 40th anniversary with an important initiative, obtaining funds that belonged to Giorgio Dal Piaz, with the agreement that the Rifugio would be dedicated to the professor.
- On March 8, 1962, Walter Bodo – president of the CAI of Feltre – officially announced plans to build a hut on the Vette Feltrine, named after Giorgio Dal Piaz, which was inaugurated on September 22, 1963, exactly seventeen months after the professor’s death.
