Description
The way leading to the summit of Cima del Colbricón Piccolo is an itinerary, which -given the wide offer of “more competitive” summer hikes around the area of Passo Rolle– is mainly designed for ski touring and, ultimately, snowshoeing. While for ski mountaineers this route is relatively easy, for people wearing snowshoes the itinerary’ length might require an additional effort.
The popular starting point is located by the parking on the main road SS 50 from Passo Rolle to Predazzo, about three kilometers from the Dolomites pass. From the parking lot, the track begins by taking the relatively flat gravel road that leads in about half an hour to the hut of Malga Colbricón (1,838 m asl), first following and then crossing the stream called Rio di Valbòna.
After the first stretch in the forest, once arrived at the so called “campìgol” of the hut, the sight opens up facing the Dolomites of the Pale di San Martino, hence offering interesting views. From the hut, the route turns right towards south-east, where it begins to climb a sparse forest with a steep slope for about 200 meters (in presence of unstable snow, we advise you to keep the right side of the slope, where the vegetation is thicker). After this stretch, the route continues the ascent along a logical line towards the south, with sections that alternate vegetation and small clearings, until it leaves the forest behind, at an altitude of approximately 2,200 meters above sea level.
The last 300 meters of climb face an open environment with wide visibility while following, on its western side, the ridge that connects the peaks of Cima Stradón (2,328 m asl) to the north with that of Colbricón Piccolo to the south. During this stretch it is advisable to keep a safe distance from the top of the ridge.
Once arrived at the summit of Cima del Colbricón Piccolo (2,511 m asl), the view is wide and breathtaking; you can admire the main mountain groups in the area: the great Colbricón (2,602 m asl) to the east -another popular destination for ski mountaineering enthusiasts-, the Pale di San Martino in the background (easily recognizable the peaks of Cimon della Pala, Vezzana and Mulaz), the Lagorai range to the south (with the Ceremana, Bragarolo and Cece peaks) and Rosengarten, Marmolada, Tofane and Civetta to the north.
Overall, the northern exposure of the wide valley normally allows you to find good snow conditions for returning to the starting point. Thus, with the appropriate changes depending on whether you have skis or snowshoes, the descent route gently follows the one of the ascent.
